When you realize you are trapped in a fire and only have seconds to escape you do not always have time to search under a bed or in the closet to find a chain ladder. Once you find it then you must deploy it, by feeding it out the window and hooking it to the windowsill, taking valuable additional time. This is often difficult for young children and the elderly to do. Also backing out of a window and feeling for the first rung of an unstable chain ladder is very difficult to do when you're in a hurry.
