Egress Window Well Covers

Egress Well Covers are not required by the current IRC Code, but many local municipalities have passed ordinances requiring structural type Egress Well Covers for safety reasons. Check with your local building inspector to determine what is required.

A structural type Egress Well Cover is one that is designed to hold about 400 pounds, keeping a person from accidently falling through the cover. All of REDDCO INC’S Egress Well Covers are structural covers that meet a 400 pound load requirement.

All of REDDCO ‘S Inc Egress Well Covers are sized to fit each specific egress well style and size, they are not one size fits all type covers.

There are three major reasons to use a Egress Well Cover on an Egress Well:

To keep children, adults and animals from accidently falling into the Egress Well. These Wells are typically 4’ wide, have a 3’ projection off the foundation wall and are any where from 4’ to 7’ deep, if a person or animal would accidently fall into the well they would sustain major injuries.

Since Egress Wells are typically deep it is not possible to clean leaves out of the well from outside the house during the fall season. The only practical way to clean the Well is from inside the house by opening the window in the basement. Some people find this objectionable.

If you live in an area that gets lots of snow, the Egress Well will not be of much value as an emergency exit during the winter months if it is filled with snow. A structural Egress Well Cover can handle a heavy snow load; just clear the cover off after every snow so it can be easily lifted in an emergency.

Out-swing Egress Windows should only be used with an Egress Well Cover if the cover sits above the Egress Window not blocking the Egress Window from opening.
